Modified Atmosphere Packaging for semi-bulk Milk powder

How Modified Atmosphere Packaging preserves milk powder quality

Milk powder, including infant formula powder, is highly sensitive to moisture and oxygen during storage and transport. Because of its low moisture content and the presence of oxidation-sensitive fats and nutrients, even limited exposure can gradually affect powder stability, sensory quality and nutritional value.

vQm Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) helps protect semi-bulk milk powder by reducing oxygen exposure and limiting external moisture ingress. The integrated vQm Two-Way Valve allows the packaging to be vacuumed and flushed with N₂ and or CO₂, creating modifed conditions inside the high-barrier packaging.

Correct product moisture content, hygienic filling, packaging integrity and product inspection remain essential, as MAP cannot correct powder that has already oxidised, absorbed moisture, or become contaminated.

Benefits for milk powder and your business

Protection against oxidation

By reducing oxygen exposure and limiting external oxygen ingress, vQm MAP helps slow oxidation of sensitive fats and oils, helping reduce rancidity, off-flavours and other oxidative quality changes.

Stabilised moisture conditions

High-barrier packaging strongly limits moisture ingress, helping reduce lumping, caking and moisture-related quality deterioration while supporting powder quality.

Protection of nutritional quality

Limiting oxygen exposure can help reduce oxidative degradation of sensitive nutritional components during prolonged storage.

Non-chemical insect treatment

Modified Atmosphere Packaging can be used to treat insects across all life stages in, using low-oxygen, CO₂-rich or N₂-rich atmospheres without conventional toxic fumigants. For applications specifically focused on insect treatment, please read our Non-chemical Insect Treatment page for requirements and further guidance.

Greater storage flexibility

By helping preserve powder quality for longer, MAP can provide greater flexibility in production planning, inventory management and international supply chains.

Recommended equipment

XL Conditioning unit

Designed for demanding semi-bulk applications such as fine powders. The higher vacuum capacity helps achieve the required MAP conditions even when milk powder compacts under vacuum and restricts free airflow.

Sealer

A reliable seal is essential for maintaining the modified atmosphere inside the packaging. The recommended sealer depends on the selected packaging option.

Handheld CO2/O2 sensor

Designed to measure and verify MAP conditions. Measuring the   and CO₂ concentrations supports quality assurance and confirms that the required MAP conditions have been achieved.

Recommended packaging

To transport semi-bulk milk powder, we recommend the following packaging:

All packaging is designed with the vQm valve sealed inside (that enables efficient gas flushing through one secure connection point at amazing speed) Explore the vQm Two-Way Valve →

Quadro Big Bag

Its form-stable square design reduces bulging and helps maximise the use of available storage and container space.

Plastic barrier liner for FIBC

Regular big bags with a flexible multilayer high-barrier liner, offering strong oxygen and moisture protection.

Bag-in-Bag

Suitable for pallet-sized stacks of smaller milk powder bags that need to remain in their original packaging. The complete load can be enclosed in a high-barrier liner and conditioned without repacking the individual bags.
